10 ACRES KITCHEN - VICTORIA, BC, CANADA

This little gem was suggested to my by a coworker who had also been a guest in Victoria. There's four parts to this cool place, the Kitchen, the Commons, the Bistro and the Farm. They grow their own produce and compost their trimmings from the kitchens. It's a lovely thing. I tried the Kitchen; their menu had a couple things that looked interesting that the Bistro didn't offer. I went a little early and snagged a booth in their sea-side-classy dining room.

Toast - Dungeness crab, hand peeled shrimp, avocado, gruyere cheese and a little chimi churri on top. The mountain of seafood was delicious, and when you hit a little chunk of cheese, the flavors all melded into a sweet, salty, savoury, perfect bite. The avocado added a nice creaminess to it, but the toast underneath could have used a thicker slice and more toasting to stand up to the weight, kind of dissolved under it all. I would definitely order this again just for all the seafood on it!

Heirloom Tomato Salad - basils, goat cheese, shallots, prosciutto and watercress with basil vinaigrette. The shallots were cold and still hard in the middle, so could have used a little longer in the pan, but they added a nice caramelized sweetness to the tangy goat cheese. I would have liked a little more basil, to even out the bites, but the prosciutto added such a great saltiness. Just really lovely.

Linguine - halibut, salmon, hand-peeled shrimp, clams, mussels and octopus in Alfredo sauce. I was a bit apprehensive when the menu said octopus, but the rest of the seafood sounded amazing. NEWS FLASH! When octopus is cooked properly, it is not rubbery! It was incredible meaty flavor and had the texture of firm steak. It was my favorite seafood in the dish! Who knew!? The sauce was great, could have used a few more noodles to balance out the pile of seafood, but it was a great portion for the price.
I will definitely be visiting again to try some more of their incredible locally sourced dishes.
