SAEGREIFINN - REYKJAVIK, ICELAND

This one is a quick one, it was my first night in Reykjavik and I only wanted a snack. I had heard tales of whale steak, so asked at the front desk of my hostel for a recommendation, and was pointed in the direction of Saegreifinn (The Sea Baron). It was on the waterfront of the marina, in a tiny wharf long building. It was packed with a Japanese tour group, so I joined the jumble that was the line. I asked the (very attractive) local man behind the counter which was the best whale steak to try, and he pointed out the minke whale steak.

Whale steak. It's an odd thing. Honestly, it tasted very similar to beef, almost a ribeye texture and flavor. Then I got a bite of fat with the meat. Holy hell! It was all ocean in that flavor. Salty, briny, tangy, it was so strange to experience. I didn't try the sauce on the side, I was just enjoying the unique, pure experience of the whale steak. If you go to Iceland, it's definitely a must-try. Absolutely.
